It is also known as berberis nervosa. The spiny leaves make a fine barrier plant or specimen. Evergreen shrub ground cover slow growing to 2 ft 60 cm stoloniferous.

Mahonia bealei also called leatherleaf mahonia or beale s barberry is originally from china but has been available to western gardeners for generations. Leaves long 30 45 cm clustered at stem tips pinnately compound 11 21 leaflets each 2 5 9 5 cm long bristle toothed glossy green may show purple in winter. It s a medium sized bush that reminds you of holly but with compound leaves borne on upright stems.

Tall sometimes more and spreads by underground stems. This oregon grape is lower growing evergreen shrub topping out at about two feet. It is a durable and adaptable to difficult growing situation.

This evergreen shrub grows upright to 2 ft 60 cm tall. It is an evergreen shrub growing to 1 m 3 ft tall by 1 5 m 5 ft wide with pinnate leaves consisting of spiny leaflets and dense clusters of yellow flowers in early spring followed by dark bluish black berries. Mahonia nervosa this shrub forms a loose groundcover with elegant emerald leaves and panicles of pale yellow flowers during the spring that mature to lovely blue berries in the fall. This shorter species is referred to as low oregon grape to distinguish it from tall oregon grape mahonia aquifolium.
