Leadplant is a subshrub to herbaceous perennial with multiple stems that can get to about 3 ft tall. The genus amorpha is often called false indigo because of its resemblance to plants of the genus indigofera.

The stems and bottoms of leaves are densely woolly. Pinnately compound leaves are covered with short dense hairs giving the plant a grayish appearance. Its leaflets are up to 2 inches long and 1 inch wide.

Indigo bush a. Deer and other mammals will eat the leaves and berries. The compound leaves are bipinnate 4 12 long and may have up to 50 small leaflets each about long and wide.

The deep taproot makes it extremely drought tolerant and able to thrive in any well drained soil. Spikes of iridescent purple flowers extend above the delicate silver gray foliage in the heat of midsummer. Fruticosa is a large bushy shrub lacking hair to 6 or even 10 feet tall.

Leaves are alternate feather compound to 4 inches long with up to 5 rounded short gray hairy leaflets each to about inch long and inch wide. Common name of lead plant refers to the once held belief that the plant was an indicator of the presence of lead in the ground. Tall with tiny purple flowers grouped together in colorful terminal spikes.
