Lead plant amorpha canescens is a perennial prairie wildflower commonly found throughout the middle two thirds of the united states and canada.

Purple flowers have one petal and are along the top parts of some of the stems. The name leadplant comes from the lead colored appearance caused by the silvery gray hairs on the foliage and stems haddock 2005. It prefers full sun but will tolerate part shade.

Leaves are odd pinnately compound and covered in dense lead colored silver gray hairs giving the plant its common name. The deep taproot makes it extremely drought tolerant and able to thrive in any well drained soil. Purple flowers have one petal and are along the top parts of some of the stems.

This small growing native shrub brings a welcome splash of color to the mid summer garden. Leadplant amorpha canescens exhibits a unique display of both foliage and flowers. Silver is particularly effective in the shade where it helps brighten dim corners.

Shade and moist well drained soil rich in organic matter. Each flower has a single 1 4 long petal curling around 10 orange tipped stamens. One of the finest silvery perennials for shade is brunnera jack frost a stunner with sky blue flowers in spring and glorious heart shape foliage that keeps its cool look all summer long.

A native of woods savannas and prairies from ontario and manitoba south to louisiana texas and new mexico leadplant is a small shrub with silvery green leaves and bluish purple flowers with bright orange anthers. Unfortunately silver leaved poplar trees are considered invasive in north america so planting them is not recommended.
