Lupine lupinus is an unusual looking plant with medium green leaves and long upright flower spikes. Rising on sturdy stems above bushy clumps of palmate bright green leaves the flowers open up from the bottom over several weeks hence providing a long blooming period. Of course yellow plant leaves may not be the only hue experienced as autumnal displays of red orange bronze and rust are common sights.

However plants in the seed stage in late summer are especially dangerous because of the high alkaloid content of the seeds. After these changes plant cover is much higher than that of the native plant community so the dune system becomes overstabilized. Soil that is too heavy too wet or has too high a ph causes iron chlorosis signaled by a yellowing of the lupine leaves and root rot caused by fungi of the rhizoctonia and fusarium genera.

Although rainbow hybrid lupine seed mixes are the most popular commercially available lupine the original blue strain is the hardiest. Lupine hybrids which are perennials have both large strains growing 4 to 5 feet tall and shorter types growing only 1 1 2 feet tall. Age is another cause when plant leaves are yellow.

The foliage resembles palm leaves with seven to ten leaflet segments each. Winter dormancy is another condition with which most are familiar that makes yellow plant leaves. Poisonous species of lupine are dangerous from the time they start growth in the spring until seed pods shatter in late summer or fall.

The amount of lupine that will kill an animal varies with species and stage of plant growth. It is quite usual for many types of plants to lose the older leaves as the new ones arrive. If the plant has lupine flowers and leaves but looks like a bush it is probably bush lupine an evergreen shrub that grows 5 to 8 feet tall.
