Photinia shrubs sometimes contract a disease called photinia leaf spot or photinia black spot. The first signs of infection are tiny reddish spots sometimes surrounded by yellow. Named for the brilliant red new foliage it produces in spring red tip photinia photinia fraseri is a popular hedging shrub but in humid conditions it develops leaf spot infections.

Leaves are dotted with black spots that slowly spread until leaves wilt and fall off. The first signs of photinia leaf spot are almost unnoticeable. Symptoms infections start as small black spots on tree leaves.

This disease is rarely deadly although it does lessen the beauty of your photinia. Entomosporium leaf spots first appear on older leaves as small red spots that darken and grow in size as the disease progresses. Unfortunately red tip photinias are particularly susceptible to leaf spot diseases.

In a matter of days the spots enlarge and eventually become dark purplish circles surrounding gray. A member of the rose family red tip photinia is susceptible to multiple diseases that can cause dark spots to develop on leaves. Tiny round red spots appear on leaf surfaces and because the leaf color of the new growth they attack the darker red spots are easy to ignore.

This fungus entomosporium mespili causes leaf spot on all members of the rose family including red tip photinias. Eventually the red spots turn into a gray area rimmed by red. This disease commonly occurs on the southern landscape plant red tip photinia.
