The shrub makes a good deciduous hedge and can be sheared to maintain the shape. It was named calycanthus after the greek for calix and flower describing its characteristic colored calix.

This species is the result of a cross between calycanthus chinensis and calycanthus floridus. As these names indicate it is valued for the sweet often fruity fragrance of its flowers.
