This is necessary to cut all the lateral roots but do not pry up on the root. Slice into the soil with a shovel making a circle around the main stem about 24 inches in diameter for mature plants. If plants are unwanted pull them before they flower and set seed.

Scotch broom cystisus scoparius is an attractive shrub that rises to about 10 feet 3 m high with an open airy growth pattern. However they may be spread over longer distances by water or in mud attached to vehicles machinery footwear and animals. The selected species have potential value for soil conservation and as feed for ruminants in the mediterranean basin.

Despite the beauty of its bright yellow spring flowers it can easily look disheveled if not pruned correctly. It is a short lived shrub but tends to reseed itself. Susceptible to leaf and stem blight.

We really like it if it is not standard. Broom shrub plants may get 9 feet 2 5 m tall and produce some spectacular bloom displays in spring. Pea like flowers in late spring along green stems.

The stem is more or less ascendent woody in the lower part branched with ascending annual and herbaceous branches suffruticose with hairs 3 millimeters long hence the latin name hirsutus of this species meaning hairy. Cytisus hirsutus reaches on average 30 40 centimetres 12 16 in of height with a maximum height of about 100 centimetres 39 in. Specialising in growing treasures.
