Leaves small alternate oval to lanceolate 4 cm long toothed leathery glossy dark green generally closely spaced along reddish stems. Well drained humitic soil with regular water until established. Sepals 4 5 2 3 to fully fused.

Upright branches are densely covered with leathery toothed evergreen leaves and small white pink urn shaped flowers emerge in spring. This broadleaf evergreen shrub is native to the pacific coastal forests. Fairly drought tolerant in maturity.

The berries are usually edible. Leaves leathery lance shaped 1 2 in. Corolla cylindric to urn or cup shaped petals generally 4 5 2 3 fused generally white.

The fruit is so small that it takes a good sized portion to make jam jelly or syrup but it is worth the effort for their sweet fresh flavor. Late spring early summer flowers yield a fine crop of culinary worthy black huckleberries in the fall. Habit a stout rounded shrub with young stems slightly hairy.
