Water regularly weekly or more often in extreme heat. And before the shrub loses its leaves in winter the color turns even brighter red. Most striking are the deep reddish purple inch long leaves.

They produce fruits or berries that create seedlings. Each bright red seed pod has one seed in it and will remain on the shrub throughout the winter giving it a very nice winter appearance as well. Watch out for the brittle three pronged thorns.
