Old overgrown junipers are a common site along the front range. We have two overgrown about 20 foot high juniper trees planted about 30 inches from the side of our newish to us house. Unfortunately evergreens are not as prunable as deciduous once they reach a certain point.

They are creating a nuisance with dead needles clogging the gutters plus providing a pathway for squirrels and raccoons to access our roof and chew through our vent jacks. Large overgrown junipers that have become too large or unattractive will need to be removed and new shrubs planted. One good place to start is the removal of any dead or leafless branches these can be cut off at the trunk.

You can also remove any branches that are overlapping or sticking out too far. Most large overgrown evergreen shrubs accept tough love. While overgrown juniper pruning has its limits it is possible to trim your plant down to a more manageable shape.

Regular pruning will keep the shrubs full healthy and attractive. If the juniper is severely overgrown it may be preferable to replace it. They can not be pruned back severely because they are incapable of initiating new growth from bare branches.
